How to get to Mount Fuji
Mount Fuji is Japan’s highest and most iconic mountain, located about 100 km southwest of Tokyo. Whether you’re visiting for sightseeing, hiking, or climbing to the summit, there are several convenient ways to reach the mountain — by train, bus, car, or tour.



🚆By Train
This route is ideal if you plan to explore Lake Kawaguchiko, Fujiyoshida, or start climbing via the Yoshida Trail.

- The special Fuji Excursion Limited Express train is a direct limited express train running between Shinjuku Station and Kawaguchiko Station via the JR Chuo Line (1 hour 55 minutes).
- From Kawaguchiko Station, take a local bus to Fuji-Subaru Line 5th Station (50 minutes).

You can reserve Fuji Excursion tickets online in advance via Eki Net JR East. Follow the steps below to secure your seat from Shinjuku to Kawaguchiko.
- Step 1: Go to the official Eki-net Website. Eki-net is JR East’s official online reservation service (available in English). Click on “English (EN)” in the upper-right corner if needed.
- Step 2: Create or log in to your account. You’ll need an Eki-net account to make a reservation. If you don’t have an account, select “Create a New Account”. Enter your email, name, and payment details (credit card is required).
- Step 3: search for the train.
- Once logged in, click " Purchase tickets (see picture below).
- Then click search by Station.
- Under Departure station, select Shinjuku. Under Arrival station, select Kawaguchiko.
- Select your travel date, departure time and number of passengers.
- Choose the train " Choose the train type “Fuji Excursion” and the preferred time.
- Please note: When boarding the train, you will need basic fare ticket or IC card such as Suica in addition to Super (Limited) Express Train ticket.
- Step 4: Choose Seat Type and select reserved seat. 💡Tip: If you want to enjoy the best view of Mount Fuji during your journey on the Fuji Excursion Limited Express, make sure to sit on the left-hand side of the train when traveling from Shinjuku to Kawaguchiko.
Left side = best mountain view (you’ll see Mount Fuji appear as the train approaches Ōtsuki and beyond).
The mountain comes into view roughly 30–40 minutes before arriving at Kawaguchiko Station.
The view is especially stunning near Fujisan Station — have your camera ready!
- When returning from Kawaguchiko to Shinjuku, sit on the right-hand side for the same great view in reverse.
- Step 5: Tickets booked on Eki-net must be picked up before boarding.
- You can collect them at: JR Ticket Machines or “Midori-no-Madoguchi” (JR Ticket Office).
- Available at Shinjuku Station, Tokyo Station, and other major JR stations.

- Local bus from Kawaguchico to Fuji-Subaru Line 5th Station
- The local service to the Fuji-Subaru Line 5th Station is operated by Fujikyu Bus. Travel time is about 50 minutes. Typical fares: ¥1,950 one-way / ¥3,000 round-trip (discounted) — round-trip tickets are convenient for climbers and hikers.
Option A — Buy at Kawaguchiko / Fujisan Station (recommended for most visitors)
Arrive at Kawaguchiko Station (or Fujisan Station) and go to the bus terminal / ticket counter. There is a staffed ticket office at the bus stop. Japan Guide+1
Tell the clerk your destination: “Fuji-Subaru Line 5th Station” and the time you want to depart.

Keep your ticket safe — you will need it to board the return bus. Arrive at the boarding platform at least 10–15 minutes before departure.
Notes: One-way tickets are often purchasable onboard, but credit cards are not accepted on board, so you’ll need cash. If you want a guaranteed seat or want a round-trip discount, buy at the ticket office
